Amazon Basin, Peru (1 week)
You leave Iquitos, the largest city in the world that is accessible only by either plane or boat, and travel down the Amazon River to the ecolodge you will stay at. Trips by boat to a different village every day allow you to treat patients in an amazing ecosystem. Time will be allotted for a jungle canopy walk, fishing for Piranha, and a night boat ride through the jungle. Hosted by a great partner DB Peru.
Lima, Peru (1 week)
Lima is a unique KIA destination in several ways. We have been sending teams led by Noriko Boorberg for many years in a row. Her and our local sponsor Vera Martin have established a wonderful working relationship. The result is a little less surgery and a greater emphasis on restorative and preventative care. As well, the accommodations and dining are a little more upscale than a traditional KIA excursion. Good for rookies.
Otuzco, Peru (1 week)
A flight from Lima to Trujillo takes you to the Peruvian “Swiss Alps”. A very cost effective trip to volunteer for as the accommodations are provided at no cost to KIA. Huge need for care here.
Morropon, Peru (1 week)
Also hosted by DB Peru, this location is in northern Peru, a very arid part of the country. To get there we fly from Lima to Piuria. Very few of the locals have any access to dental care, so your days will be hectic. Located inland from Peru’s best beaches.
Otuzco, Peru (1 week)
A flight from Lima to Trujillo gets you to the Peruvian “Swiss Alps”. A less expensive commitment because the rustic and clean accommodations are free. Huge needs. This area was affected by the spring flooding in 2017.
Chisec 1, Guatemala (1 week)
Chisec 2, Guatemala (1 week)
Kindness in Action and CHILA have nurtured a very special relationship over the years. We have been sending back to back teams to northern Guatemala for the past five seasons and still the need for dental care is huge. Dr. Brian Smith is our generous and enthusiastic host. Numerous volunteers come back and back again, year after year, to provide care at this special destination.
India (2 weeks)
This trip is being offered through connections within the Rotary Club. We are working in the District of Assam in Northeast India. It is an area noted for its wildlife, architectural sites and tea plantations at the base of the Himalayas. There will be a local flight from New Delhi to Gauhati airport where we will take a bus to the destination. First time excursion, hopefully first of many.
Cambodia (2 weeks)
In the past we have sent one, and sometimes two, teams a year to Cambodia. This destination is probably the best bang for your buck of all the KIA journeys. Our host, Peter Heyes, and his associates have worked with us for over a decade and the excursions have always been incredibly well organized. In your leisure time you’ll get to see the sights of Phnom Penh and the temples of Angkor Wat at Siem Riep.
Tibetan Frontier (3 weeks)
Drive by van from Chengdu in the Schezwan province of China west into the foothills of the Himalayas. You will be staying at local accommodations, and your diet will be unlike any you have experienced on previous trips. Spicy!! A lot of travel days overall, many miles, but well worth it.
Vietnam (2 weeks)
Flying in and out of Ho Chi Minh City. A first time in trip for KIA. Seven days of clinic out of two different locations. Not a luxury trip, you will eat authentic local cuisine, accommodations will be simple but comfortable.
Uganda (2 weeks)
A trip to Kamwokya School in Kampala, Uganda is planned so we can bring dental care to children who desperately need it. In 2012 a team of dentists and their team went to the school to provide dental care but another trip is needed. Without the help of dental volunteers, children are living with toothaches and issues. It is our goal to create a destination that dental teams can return to easily to help the children in Uganda.
Tena, Ecuador (1 week)
A return to the east side of the Andes in Ecuador. We have sent teams in the past and are hoping to return in 2019. Tena is on the Napo River, part of the Amazon Basin. An adventurous ride by bus from Quito over the Andes to the other side. Clinics will be in different villages every day. Accommodations are in a spectacular jungle lodge.
